We’ve all heard the saying, behind every great man is a great woman.
But who is behind every great woman?
According to a pillow on my bed, the answer is: Herself.
I’m pretty sure I picked it up from my godmother’s house sometime after her passing. And while there’s some truth, it doesn’t tell the whole story.
Behind every truly great woman, I imagine, is also a chorus of souls—those who have held space, whispered encouragement, spoken hard but loving truths, and cleared paths in ways history doesn’t always record.
While the saying on my pillow that "Behind every great woman is herself” sounds nice, I think that story only serves to sever us from our actual power.
The truth is that we are carried by the prayers of those who came before us, the friends who remind us who we are when we forget, and the stories that guide us in the darkest of days.
And as women’s history month comes to a close I’d like you to consider that maybe the greatness of a woman has less to do with her ability to go it alone and more to do with her willingness to simply take her unique place in this great theater of belonging—and make space for others to join along.
